Back story
(TL;DR: Big war happened, human world population decreasing, scientists combine human and animal to create super-humans, or chimeras, war catches up to them, chimeras escape, years later a man captures one, and with the help of the government, they capture more and start an "exhibit.")
The world was ending.
Not only was the climate's natural change, merely sped up with human interference, killing off many living things, flora and fauna, but a major war had broken out over the remaining resources. It was difficult to tell between who. Alliances were broken and reformed, spies turned into double-agents, enemies were fighting side-by-side out of sheer necessity, and everyone was torn on whether to use nuclear power on their enemies or not.
During this time, people were desperate. Even within "alliances" there was turmoil, soldiers and civilians alike killing each other for mere rations. Everything was chaos.
The war had killed off so many, the survival of the human species was called into question. Sworn into secrecy, the world's top scientists, guarded by top-notch military, were grouped for one reason only: the survival of human kind. Their goal: to create human chimeras that could stand the harshest of conditions to power through tough times such as this.
The first experiments failed miserably. Those that survived for more than a few weeks were horribly disfigured, and needed constant attention to keep their heart beating. But one mistake led to their only hope.
It was a mix of human and polar bear DNA. At that time, the experiments ranged from injecting foreign DNA into humans, full0grown and adolescent, to fertilizing human eggs with animal sperm and vice-versa. In this case, it was the product of a human mother and a polar bear father. It came earlier than expected, killing the mother during surgery and nearly dying itself. When it was said to have an expected life-span of a little less than a year, due to horrible mutations that only burdened it, one of the patients, a woman regularly receiving the DNA of a bird, took pity on the infant and took it under her "wing," the term being taken somewhat more seriously in this case.
It was a hermaphrodite, but from then on, was known as a "she," under the name Kola. Under her new surrogate mother, Kola grew up to be a full 15 years old, her metabolism all over the chart. During that time, virtually nothing was accomplished and the war raged on. When one of her hormone spikes hit, she barely managed to sing (as she couldn't speak. Her lungs could barely take any air, much less use it for speech) that she wanted to be a mother. After much deliberation and insisting on Kola's end, her surrogate agreed. Kola was scheduled for artificial insemination of another polar bear within the month.
Luckily, by the time she was with child, her hormonal high hadn't worn off and she was just as willing as she had been when she made the decision. Unfortunately, that same buzz, as well as her inadequate anatomy, made pregnancy much harder on her than should have been acceptable. Everyone that cared for her insisted that she abort the child before they both died. But she refused, riding through the pregnancy until birth. But even then. she was bedridden for most of the passing months, getting weaker and weaker every time she got up and tried to do something other than stare at the ceiling.
Kola's child came early, just as she had. In fact, most of her child's birth resembled her own. Major complications, requiring surgery, and resulting in the mother's death. Kola died mere hours after surgery. Pregnancy had taken to much out of her to survive birth.
What came afterward, however, was miraculous. Not only was the baby alive, but it was stabilized out of the in and out comatose state normal in infants of mixed DNA in little over two days.
Kola's child, though with a few hormonal imbalances, was female, and thus named with her mother in mind, Kila.
Kila had unhealthy mutations of her own, such as acute asthma and myostatin, among others, most of which were worse. But according to records, Kila was a full 30% healthier than other other infants with mixed DNA. Some thought it was luck, others thought it was a fluke, and most of the rest believed it was both. But enough were convinced that was a breakthrough that studies began on Kila to see what made her so healthy.
When nothing was found besides a different balance between the human and animal chromosomes, they risked having her bear a child of her own.
The pregnancy, yet another artificial insemination, was nearly as hard as Kola's, but both mother and child lived through it and made a full recovery. And better yet, the child had even better health than Kila. With every generation, the chromosomal imbalance was sorting itself out.
However, to construct a steady pattern, they needed more examples. Kila was instructed to bear more children, being careful to keep her health steady. Very carefully, she gave birth to a total of 15 children before her body could go no more. She didn't die, but miscarriages and stillbirths became the norm, so they stopped attempting.
Most of Kila's children had crippling health defects that didn't result in much other than contributing to the data pattern. This pattern was studied and attempted further through the generations that followed. All other testing halted so the entire staff's focus could go to Kola's blood line.
The final result was a complete success.
The latest in the line was a male, with the best of humans and bear both. He was susceptible to certain diseases, both the pros far outweighed the cons. Testing on other DNA mixes began immediately.
Having the data of Kola's line was a fantastic breakthrough in the testing. Every successful end result came sooner and sooner until the scientists in the testing facility had it down to an art. Soon, they had hundreds of different chimera species.
Then, catastrophe struck.
It had taken long enough to perfect the art of mixing DNA, and the world was at a critical point. A leak finally managed to wriggle its way through the cracks. The outside world found out about the chimera testing. Though the governments involved with the testing tried to cover up, the leak spread into a waterfall and the location of the facility was discovered and attacked.
Panic reigned. By the time the dust settled, the facility had been completely demolished, most of the staff dead, and virtually all the chimeras gone. They had escaped the onslaught and disappeared into the wild. The attackers attempted to find them, but few succeeded, and fewer were able to keep a hold on them. During this time of war, not many provisions could be given to hold the products of a possible conspiracy. In fact, the only reason the scientists were able to keep them for testing was because most of them participated willingly, thinking their situation to be honorable, living on as the improved version of an already advanced species, if not others.
After the war
Somehow, the war ended. Maybe it was scientific advancements helping the environment sustain humans, maybe it was the world giving up on the blood bath, maybe it was something else entirely different. Either way, the war did end, and human kind started to recover, without the help of the chimeras.
Instead, tales of sightings of half human, half beast like creatures turned from bunker stories to urban legends. Instead of Bigfoot, there was the Bear-Man. Instead of the Chupacabra, there was the Laghairt. There were theories and skeptics, faked evidence and shaky videos. Until one man managed to capture a wild adolescent.
The man's name was Lancin DeLock. Breaking the young chimera into a tether in a cage was all he needed to do to hold the inexperienced child. He paraded the child around to circuses, fairs, and freak shows, drawing in thousands of dollars worth of crowds, until the government intervened.
When challenged, DeLock saw only one way to satisfy the government while also keeping his income going. He struck a deal.
DeLock would still be able to show around his little "pet," while the government could do what they wished with him when they weren't showing off. The officials didn't agree at first, but 40% of the profits waved them over.
Unfortunately, the child, now grown into a teenager, had gone somewhat nuts out of boredom. Now, all he did was rock back and forth, silent as a stone. But when they let him free for a while, he ran around like a mad-man, still not making any any sense when spoken too.
The same officials approached DeLock again. He kept his deal going by suggesting that he take a party or trackers and military into the wild to capture more of these chimeras. Again, they went along with it.
A full two years passed before they returned, a multitude of chimeras of all ages being man-handled at all times to keep from escaping. Now that there wasn't a war to worry about, more attention could be given to enclosing the chimeras. And did they ever enclose them. The "exhibit" they started was a world attraction.
That's where you come in.

The Exhibit
Think of it like a zoo.
- Each species is cut into three groups. One for the the smaller cages that fit only one so onlookers can get a better look at each species. Another, larger, temperature controlled (depending on the species) enclosure, much like a normal tiger enclosure, where several of the same species (or one, if they are solitary) are held so people can see how they act in their "natural" habitat. The last one is a huge, enclosed space of several hundred acres, with different controlled climates so people can pay to have a "safari" of sorts, trying to interact with the chimeras. It is highly dangerous. These three groups cycle between the three types of enclosures every couple of months.
- There are also regular feeding times, again depending on the species.
- The staff of the Exhibit keep careful watch of the chimeras and their behavior. They will know very quickly if a chimera is sick, in heat, going through puppetry, or pregnant, and will just as quickly decide what to do about the situation. For now, while the chimeras numbers in the Exhibit are low, they concentrate on heightening those numbers or keep it stable.
- So if a chimera is sick, they will do their best to heal it. They will put it in a solitary cage, so whatever it's caught doesn't spread, with constant surveillance. They will have a specialized vet in their staff come over once to identify the chimera's ailment, and another time for a follow-up. Meanwhile, the chimera will be fed it's normal diet with its medicine ground into the food. When it seems it is healthy again, it will be washed thoroughly and giving an equally arrant check-up. If the chimera is healthy again, it is put back into its normal schedule.
- If a chimera is going through puberty, it is very cautiously put into a separate cage at all times, as it can be easily aggravated and highly dangerous. They feed it very carefully and with more protection than what they would normally wear.
- If a chimera is in heat, it is put into a separate cage at all times, with another chimera of its species and opposite sex, who is also in heat or about to be. They are kept in this cage until signs of pregnancy are apparent.
- When a chimera is pregnant, the male is removed and the female is kept in the same cage. It is kept under similar conditions as a chimera going through puberty, as hormonal imbalance makes the cases similar. Staff is only present during birth, in case there are complications. Otherwise, the chimera is left relatively alone during birth.
